I am the mother of none, but the very proud Aunt to four beautiful children. I did absolutely no work to create them, but I will do everything in my power to help raise them.

A lot of people were surprised by how I could maintain such a close bond with my niece and nephews when they lived several states away from me for 9 years. Though our houses were located hundreds of miles away, our hearts lived as close as next-door neighbors. And I’m about to reveal my secret:

I worked for it.

I didn’t use any excuses like, “I wish we had a close relationship, but we live so far away.”  Nope, I’ve made it my mission to be involved in their lives ever since my niece Layla was born in 2009.  And it paid off! Now that they live 10 minutes away, I’m not a stranger trying to build a relationship from the ground up. I’m one of their favorite people because I invested so much of my time making sure they got to know me for all these years.

I was and still am an active Aunt, in constant communication with them, taking extra steps whenever possible. For example, when Valentine’s Day rolls around every year, guess who they get a gift from? You guessed it.

I encourage all Aunts to remain active in their niece and nephews’ lives, especially during their formative years. This way, you can continue having a great relationship with them into their adult years. Invest your time, and some money into cultivating a long-lasting relationship filled with love, laughter, and heartfelt memories.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for your nieces and nephews

I have designed little treats and Valentine’s cards through my Zazzle store as well as recommended some other free options (if you don’t count a postage stamp). Here are some fun Valentine’s gift ideas for your nieces and nephews! It doesn’t matter if you live close by or far away, mail goes everywhere!

1.) Write them a letter.

Take out a piece of paper and start recalling the times they made you laugh, warmed your heart, or just simply a few memories that you don’t want to forget. Keep a copy for yourself, pop it in an envelope, and drop it in the mail.

Sending letters to your nieces and nephews creates lasting memories for them to refer back to for years to come! It’s one gift they’ll never outgrow! Need help?  Get 3 FREE letter templates from me!  Click here!

Even if you don’t give them the letter write away, get in the habit of writing letters for a future date. A fun idea is to keep them in a personalized notebook. You can also use it to scrapbook pictures they’ve made you, funny selfies you’ve snapped, tickets to events you’ve gone to together, etc. This way you can look back at them and write a response to what that day meant to you. It’s a gift that they can hold on to forever. Loving words are never outgrown!

2.) Send Personalized Goodies!

Order customizable goodies with your name printed on them! Sending something edible for your niece and nephew to snack on for the holiday is a great way to satisfy their sweet tooth AND put a plus one in your column for favorite Aunt. There’s something for everyone. Brownies, chocolate covered Oreos, and sugar cookies – all with your name on it! There will be no mistaking who gave them these delicious treats!

3.) Send a greeting card or postcard this Valentine’s Day to your niece or nephew.

Never underestimate the power of the mail! Kids LOVE getting mail! Anything that has their name on it makes them SO HAPPY!

I used to send them letters as Santa all year. Yes, Santa.

I’d capture their imagination, plant the seeds of possibilities, and inspire them with kind words and healthy habit reminders. They went NUTS for these cards and never suspected they were from me!

4.) Make Your Own Picture!

Drawing is sort of my thing, but I know it’s not everyone’s strong suit. My niece and nephews often ask me to draw them a picture of their favorite characters and superheroes. Last year, I got the request to draw them their favorite foods – they’re so spoiled, but I can’t say no to their cute requests!

When we were still a long-distance family, we’d send each other refrigerator art. The little sentiment goes a long way. If you’d like to send a drawing to your nieces and nephews, but don’t know how to draw, I highly suggest Art for Kids Hub on YouTube.

This channel breaks down all the steps to drawing popular cartoon characters, emoji faces, and more! The host draws with someone less experienced than him (usually one of his kids) to show that even inexperienced artists can achieve great results! It’s a kid-friendly channel and fan favorite in my family. Now that we live close to each other, we can draw side by side together 🙂

5.) Send A Craft Kit

If you want a little something extra to go along with your cards and treats, I suggest a craft kit. My niece and nephews LOVE to craft! They patiently sit down and approach each project they take on with such precision. They often send me pictures of their completed projects or hand them to me to display in my home. When they come to visit, they enjoy seeing their artwork and crafts in plain sight.

My sister really appreciates when the kids get to do a project. It gives her a little quiet time and they love the immediate satisfaction of a completed craft!
