Introduction
Many of you may already know from reading the About Me page or from my article, entitled, An Aunt’s Purpose that I have a lot of emotional attachment to my role as an Aunt and my purpose within my family. I’m an active, caring, protective, and supportive Aunt to my two nieces and two nephews. It’s difficult to find the exact words to accurately describe my feelings towards them. And I know this sounds a bit cliche, but there isn’t much I wouldn’t do for them. I don’t pretend to be a mother figure to them. I am a mother figure to them and I take this role on very seriously. I did absolutely nothing to create them but do everything in my power to help raise them. They have transformed my life simply by existing. They are my everything.
Having this strong mindset about being an Aunt got me thinking, that I can’t be the only person to have these views. There must be other women out there, some mothers and some not, who care about their nieces and nephews like I do. As it turns out, there are! Compared to the Mommy world, we may be a smaller community of women, but nonetheless, we exist.
Finding out that this community of women exists prompted my next thought. These are women whose stories deserve to be shared. And their voices deserve to be heard so others can begin to understand what Aunthood looks like behind the scenes. I have now set out to interview women who proudly call themselves Aunts or Aunties and want the world to hear about their life experience in this role. I’m calling this
series of interviews Auntieviews. Every Aunt has their own unique perspective and background on how they have embraced their role as an Aunt. In each interview I will dive into to learn about all of my
fellow Aunts, what they are most proud of, what they struggle with, and hear about advice they would give to other Aunts (both present and future).
I hope you enjoy reading these interviews as much as me!
