If you’re on the fence of whether or not you want to bring a furry friend into your home, there are things that every dog owner will agree on. They change your life for the better.
Yes, they’re incredibly cute, but they also improve our lives and make them fuller. There’s a bond that forms between people and their dogs. Once you’ve decided to bring them into your home, life will never be the same.
If you’re not completely sold on becoming a dog owner, here are the top 10 reasons why your life will improve by owning a dog:
A dog loves you no matter what
Dogs don’t care what job you have. They don’t care if you put on makeup today. Dogs don’t care if you decided to skip the gym today. They don’t judge you.
The love that a dog gives you is simple and true. It’s not dependent upon how you look to the outside world. Dogs will love you unconditionally. Whether your happy, sad, confused, or highly motivated, your dog will love you all the same.
A dog brings you comfort when we’re upset
These speechless creatures are truly a man’s best friend. Dogs can sense when you’re upset or sick and know to offer some unprovoked TLC.
The reasoning behind it doesn’t matter as much as the result of their doing. When you’re upset, a furry friend approaching you immediately lightens your mood. It’s a break from the internal heaviness that you’re experiencing. They’re your in-home therapy.
A dog makes you think of someone else besides our selves
Learning how to care for someone else teaches us how to be more compassionate and understanding. Yes, we need to take care of ourselves, but to take care of someone else is a selfless act.
By taking care of a dog, you’re learning how about the importance of thinking of others. There’s a sense of accomplishment and you’ll experience several feel good moments. It teaches you patience and how to grow as a person.
A dog makes you responsible
Dogs are completely dependent on you for their basic needs and safety. They can’t feed themselves, take themselves to the doctor, or ensure that they get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They need all of those things, but it’s your responsibility to make sure they get it.
A dog makes you laugh
Laughter is the best medicine. The behaviors of a dog are not always clear to us and a lot of times they’re unexpected. Watching a dog bark at themselves in the mirror, chase their tail in excitement, or make exaggerated facial gestures is just funny.
You can’t help but laugh at their silly antics, and you shouldn’t try to hold that laughter back either. Laughing increases the level of endorphins you produce. This makes you feel better and lower blood pressure, reduce stress and boost your immune systems.
A dog makes you exercise
It’s necessary for your dog to get daily exercise. You know who else should be active on a daily basis? You.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to be active. Owning a dog and knowing that he or she needs regular exercise is a great reason to get up and get active with your pet. It’s always better to have a buddy with you while out on a walk. Your dog will become your accountability partner since they need to walk too.
A dog makes you socialize more
Dogs are great icebreakers. When out walking your dog, you’ll often run into other people with dogs or others that want to say hello because you have a dog. They draw people in. So if you’re the type that has trouble talking to new people, having a dog with you will ease that angst.
Also, there are dog parks and organized events centered around bringing you pup. You now can share you mutual interest with other people in a social setting.
A dog gives your day structure and routine
Sometimes we can become lazy and not want to get out of bed. Or the couch is calling our name and we answer the call. With a dog, you can’t be lazy. You’re responsible for taking care of their needs. They need to be fed, walked, and played with on a routine. Therefore, because they’re part of you life, your day now has structure.
A dog will protect you
A dog, no matter it’s size can be your protector. Their heightened senses can make you aware when there’s someone at your door, by your home, or just in your proximity.
A barking dog brings attention to any area. So if a potential intruder might be deterred simply because their bark would bring attention to them.
A dog helps you be neat and clean
When you’re cooking in the kitchen and something fall on the floor, it’s quite convenient for your run over you and slurps it up. Or if it’s something that they shouldn’t be eating, you’ll quickly run to pick it up so they don’t get sick.
Also, you might ignore the dust because it’s too small to see, but the dog hair will keep you on your toes. So even though it might be annoying, it’ll prompt you to get out the Swiffer and clean!
Dogs are our loyal companions that come into our lives and steal our hearts without one word ever spoken. They are our best friends, our exercise buddies, and our selfless companions. Owning a dog will improve your life.
