I am the mother of none, but the very proud Aunt to four beautiful children. I did absolutely no work to create them, but I will do everything in my power to help raise them.

Ever wonder how you’re doing as an Aunt?

I do all the time, but then realized that I’m so involved in my nieces and nephews lives that I’ve never really stepped back to consider all that I do and evaluate my status.

So I made a list of 7 things that the Best Aunts do on a regular basis that qualify us as the Best Aunts Ever.

Do you share any of these qualities?  Take a look at my list below and let me know in the comments section if you do!

1.) You worry that you’re not.

You constantly wonder if you’ve done enough, said enough, or offered enough support to your nieces and nephews.

I’m 100% dedicated to my role as an Aunt, and I’m sure you are too.  To me that means when they ask for you, you’re available. And if you’re not immediately available, you make time for them later.

But it never feels like it’s enough, right?  We’re left wondering, can I do more? We worry because we care and we care because we’re awesome Aunts.

If your niece or nephew are constantly on your mind and it has you questioning yourself, chances are you’re going above and beyond what anyone could ever except of you.

2.) You post on my social media about their birthdays, accomplishments, or visits with me, etc.

Proud Aunts boast.  I felt a little silly when someone whom I hadn’t seen in years comments on one of my MANY pictures of my niece, “Omg! I didn’t know you had kids, we need to catch up!” This left me to have to confess, “I didn’t have kids, my sister did.”  It bothered me for a while until I eventually I threw that mentality into the trash along with the conspicuously old Chinese food.

Who cares if they’re not your children, they matter to you, so posting about anything that has to do with them is not reserved for parents only.  It’s reserved for the people that care, and you’re one of them.  They’re YOUR NIECE or YOUR NEPHEW and you want to show everyone just how proud you are of them.  Post away!

3.) You make time to see them outside of birthdays or big events.

I’m a big proponent of “just us” time.  Birthdays and special events are great, but it’s almost like you’re expected or obligated to be there.  Of course you want to be there for their big days, but we become background noise because it’s their time to shine.

Bonding can’t happen when there’s a whole lot of distractions, time constraints, friends, parents, etc. playing in the mix.  Some of the most fun had with my nieces and nephews when it’s just you, with no one else around to bare witness. Not everything needs to be a great big celebration, it’s the combination of those little moments that make for lasting memories and strong relationships.

4.) The sheer thought of them brings a smile to your face.

When you need to go to that happy place in your head to get through a rough time, you picture their faces.  All you need to do is envision any one of your nieces or nephews smiling or laughing and you can immediately feel your face soften and your mood lighten.

They brighten up your world and make you proud to call yourself an Aunt.  Agreed?

5.) You can’t go more than a day without a call, text, FaceTime, visit, etc.

Right now my nieces and I are into SnapChat (get on it, it’s fun).  It’s become part of our routine to hear from each other at least once a day.

I’m sure you’ll agree, they’re a part of your world and it feels off when you haven’t heard from them.  Best Aunts Ever can’t let it go too long.  We go through withdrawal.

6.) You’re an Aunt first and a friend second.

You’re not afraid to loose your cool Aunt status for a minute or two because they got mad at you.  In fact, getting mad shows just how much you both care.

Sometimes being an adult sucks, but we’re setting the example, so if we’re not their favorite person all the time, we know at the end of the day we’ll all get over it.  Aunts step up and step in when necessary, but at the end of the day we can hug it out.

7.) They ask to be with you.

I’m sure you can relate, nothing warms your heart more than when you’re asked for, even if it’s just for a quick hello on the phone.  It means that you’re doing your job.

They know you well enough that you’ve become a part of their lives just as much as they’re a part of yours.  They know you’ll be there for them to help, listen, laugh together, etc. whenever they need.

You can confidently claim your Best Aunt Ever status because you have spent countless hours playing, teaching, feeding, laughing, and nurturing these little ones and now they want more of you.  That’s why you’re the Best Aunt Ever.
